A County Seat Built on Money and a River-Adjacent Park
Monticello became Piatt County's seat in 1841, and its wealthiest legacy, Allerton Park, was built on farmland the Allerton family developed into an estate later gifted to the University of Illinois in 1946. That estate and much of Monticello's historic core reflect over a century of continuous construction and landscaping investment.

Older, elaborate properties like those on Monticello's Millionaires Row and the Allerton estate grounds often have more complex landscaping and drainage features than a typical farmhouse, which changes how storm water moves across and around them. Restoration planning there should account for those older, purpose-built drainage systems rather than treating every property the same.
