Built and Rebuilt on a Federal Timeline
Chanute Field trained Air Service recruits from 1917 until the base closed in 1993, and Rantoul's construction followed that mission's needs for 76 years before civilian redevelopment began adding yet another building generation on former base land. Different eras of that construction were not all built with the same storm or water resistance in mind.
Storm Risk Across Multiple Building Eras
With central Illinois's long-track tornado exposure and Champaign County's documented 79 tornadoes between 1950 and 2019, Rantoul's mixed-era housing and former base buildings don't all respond to storm water the same way. Restoration planning benefits from knowing whether a structure dates to the base era or the post-1993 redevelopment.
