Growth That Outpaced the Drainage It Sits On
Savoy more than doubled in population between 2000 and 2024, the fastest growth of any Champaign County municipality, building out largely on the county's historically poorly-drained black prairie soil. Savoy is also a named partner, alongside Champaign, Urbana, and the University of Illinois, in the regional Champaign County Stormwater Partnership that coordinates municipal drainage permitting.
What Storm Water Does to Newer Construction
Rapid build-out means a lot of Savoy's housing shares the same age and the same drainage exposure, so a heavy rain event or storm sewer backup can affect whole subdivisions at once rather than isolated older homes. That concentration is worth knowing when planning water-damage response in the village.
